Design Engineer

Position:
Design Engineer
Location:
Canada
Type:
Full-Time

We are looking for a Design Engineer to sit in the gap between the design file and the deployed site — building component libraries, prototyping in real code, and making the design system something engineers reach for rather than work around.

You will be the person who answers “can we actually build that?” before anyone has spent a week on it, and who makes the answer yes more often than it would otherwise be.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the studio's component library: the tokens, the primitives, and the documentation that keeps them honest.
  • Prototype hard interactions in real code, early, so design decisions are made against something that runs.
  • Keep the design file and the built components in agreement, and fix whichever one is wrong.
  • Pair with designers on feasibility, performance and accessibility while the work is still cheap to change.
  • Write the tooling that removes the repetitive parts of handover.

Required

  • Strong HTML, CSS and JavaScript, plus real comfort in a design tool.
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system that other people used.
  • A bias towards the platform: web components, native CSS, and as few dependencies as the job allows.
  • The judgement to know which inconsistencies are worth chasing.

Life at Obliq Studio

Life at Obliq Studio is built around a culture of creativity, clarity and craftsmanship. We operate with a clear, structured workflow that removes chaos and gives you the space to produce your best work. You will collaborate with designers, engineers, strategists and writers who treat every project as a story that needs emotion, intention and technical precision in equal measure.

We value trust over micromanagement. The studio is remote-friendly, the calendar is deliberately thin, and the work spans SaaS, ecommerce, hospitality, arts and culture — so no two quarters look the same. Your ideas are welcome, your craft decisions are respected, and nobody is asked to defend a good decision twice.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary with a published band and a yearly review.
  • Remote-friendly hours, with two overlapping days a week for reviews.
  • A budget for tools, conferences and whatever you are teaching yourself this year.
  • Work on visually rich international projects across several industries.
  • Structured handovers, written briefs and no unnecessary meetings.
  • Regular craft reviews that are about the work rather than the person.

How to apply

Send a portfolio, a short note about a project you would do differently now, and anything you have made that nobody asked you to make. We read everything, we reply to everyone, and the process is three conversations and one paid exercise.
