How design shapes trust and client loyalty

Introduction
Clients do not renew because of a rebrand. They renew because working with you was predictable in the ways that mattered and surprising only in the ways they enjoyed.
The studio is part of the design
A client experiences your process far more often than they experience your output. Twenty status updates, six reviews and one launch. If the process is confusing, no amount of craft at the end recovers it — and if the process is clear, ordinary work is received generously.
What clients are actually judging
- Whether the thing you showed last time turned into the thing you showed this time.
- Whether bad news travels as fast as good news.
- Whether the estimate moved, and whether you said so before they asked.
Designing the relationship
Write the review structure into the proposal: what is shown, when, and what decision each session needs. A client who knows what is expected of them turns up prepared, and prepared clients give better feedback than enthusiastic ones.
Conclusion
Loyalty is not won at the launch. It is won in the eighteen unremarkable weeks before it, by a studio that was easy to be a client of.
